I just want to inform the OP that there are extensions which can be used to extend the functionality of Gnome.... and KDE really does have a much more configurable interface.

These are provided by third parties and not Gnome themselves. These are checked concerning security. Extensions can sometimes mess with stability, however, but Debian have packaged a number of popular extensions so you don't have this problem. This is the way to go. For example, I have the packages
