What I enjoyed was being able to fix them when they broke. You just stroll into the hobby store with a random cable or piece and they sold you one for a couple bucks.
Actually, I'll add Walkman here for the same reason.
Those were the last things that we could fix with ease where I grew up. The hobby stores began to disappear. No fun. I had to fix a cd-radio thing a few months back, and an RC car. Luckily they were just cases of loose cables.
