I recently set up 2 old computers with Debian 12 and gnome for my kids(3 and 4 years old) and wanted to share the experience. They love clicking around and hammer the keyboard. The whole thing is about having fun with computers and maybe learn something later on.
Here is our setup and what we use:
* No internet or network.
* Most of the time only 3-button mouse plugged in.
* Largest cursor.
* gnome-paint for painting.
* calculator for playing around with numbers and playing store.
* Reversi for clicking around.
* gedit for smashing keys and learning letters.
* Disabled "Hot corner" and "Activate Screen Edges"
Most of the time they click around and tell me when they want something special. Sometimes it's just in and out of the menu. Hiding Settings and disable keyboard shortcuts is probably something that would make it easier for them.
Things that happened along our way:
* Set resolution to something that would not show up.
* Set the language on the monitor to something Asian.
* Changed random things in Settings->accessibility.
* Trying the power-button and dvd eject-button. The power-button flashes when in sleep and that makes it more fun.
Things that would be fun to change:
* Bigger icons in gnome-paint.
* Icons that make sounds when you hover over them.
* Button to activate screensaver.
* Big analog clock as background.
Everything great and fun so far. If you have any tips or want to share you experince with family computers I love to hear it.
