bw123, you were absolutely right, I did hit the ground running.
Turns out for some reason my initial debian install had no network manager installed. My noobiness didn't let me see that at first !
I managed to ipxe boot my way into another new fresh install, plugged in a spare external ethernet/usb interface, and apt-get a couple of utilities myself, as well as firmware-atheros, just to make sure.
Now it rolls.
