The story is somewhat incongruous.
After a random undocumented update it stopped working. So you tried an undocumented partial upgrade into bookworm and it got worse? Is that about right?
At this point you might as well add the new section 'non-free-firmware' and change the release name to 'bookworm' in sources.list and finish the upgrade. While you're at it make a choice between nouveau and nvidea and remove the loser. In addition there were many changes in gnome between 11 and 12.

Likely not. at first trouble my thought would be to backtrack recent changes instead of compounding the troubles with additional changes. It has to be hardware related I'm guessing
