Gparted can not modify a mounted partition.
(well, it Can make one bigger by moving the boundary to the Right...)
you should use Gparted on a USB.
Typically I make Root 30 GB... have had the same problem with major updates with smaller.
(I use a separate /home)
The Debian Installer likes to make Swap 1 GB. I recently found it nearly fills up, so I created a second swap and added to to my fstab file. Now I have a total of 8 GB.
