Just guessing, system was trying to render your graphics to onboard. No downside if you weren't using the onboard. Notice it's using Display: x11 server with Nvidia now, not Wayland.Wow, thanks.
I disabled onboard graphics in BIOS since it seemed like the simpler thing to try first. Installed nvidia-drivers again and it worked!
Can you please help me understand why this resolved the problem with the black screen? And are there any downsides to not having the onboard graphics enabled (maybe higher power consumption?)
