Well, it's either hardware or firmware. Clean install of Trixie daily build to an external drive, upgraded to Sid, installed xorg, xinit, openbox and firefox-esr and xorg crashes on start.
I did notice during the Trixie --> Sid upgrade that firmware-intel-graphics got installed and that package is *not* installed on 8th or 10th-gen Intel video chipsets.
edit: fixed.
Apparently this hardware now requires firmware-intel-graphics even though it worked just fine without it until last Thursday's upgrade. Interesting story, though.
Chroot from System Rescue CD with a 6.1 kernel (which, BTW is the easiest chroot in the business) worked with the existing broken install and X worked as expected. Booted back into a 6.9.8 kernel which didn't work any better than 6.9.9 did so just for the hell of it I installed firmware-intel-graphics and everything came back up.
Only thing I can figure is that since firmware-intel-graphics wasn't installed before it didn't get installed during upgrades, which makes sense. The down side is I have no idea how to bug this or even which package should get the bug report![Smile :)]()
